Matt Charney's Recommended Read for HR Professionals

Matt Charney is executive editor of the Recruiting Daily blog.

Top recommendation for HR: The Prince (Dover Publications, 1992) by Niccolo Machiavelli.

Why it’s relevant: While this classic is centuries old (kind of like your policies and HCM system), it remains relevant. Let’s face it, there are two core competencies every HR practitioner should have: risk mitigation and self-preservation. The ability to wield power against all odds and by any means necessary is important in determining HR’s success or failure.

What I’m bringing to the beach: I’ll be catching up on all the screenplays of movies from this year’s awards season. As a writer, I like reading screenplays to learn what works in terms of tone, style and presentation. Plus, I like to pretend I’m still working as a screenwriter—although being a blogger is more fun.
