Application deadline for the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility has been extended to May 10, 2013.
The award is part of the When Work Works flexible workplace initiative, a joint project of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the Families and Work Institute (FWI). The application period opened in January.
The Sloan award was first given in 2005 and is open to employers across the United States. An organization must have been in operation for at least one year at the time of application, and have at least 10 employees, excluding contract workers or consultants that are not reported to the Internal Revenue Service. For-profit and non-profit organizations in the public and private sectors are eligible.
Worksites located in one of the participating When Work Works partner communities or states should select that community when registering to apply. An employer that does not have a worksite located in one of the participating communities may apply as an "at large" applicant. More than 100 of the 352 winners in 2012 were “at large” applicants.
Two-Part Application Process
Round one of the application process requires employers to complete an online questionnaireabout the workplace flexibility programs and practices at the worksite being nominated. Employers with multiple locations may submit applications for more than one worksite. Responses are gauged against the Families and Work Institute'songoing National Study of Employers; those ranking among the top 20 percent of employers in the U.S., when compared to FWI’s national data, advance to round two.
In round two, an organization’s employees are invited to complete a questionnaire that asks about individual use and experience with workplace flexibility at their worksite, how supportive the workplace culture is toward flexibility and similar questions.
All applicants will receive a Sloan Award Benchmarking Report on Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility that compares their employer and employee responses to other award applicants and winners, and compares them to nationally representative samples. Winners will be profiled in the annual Guide to Bold New Ideas for Making Work Work, and recognized at the FWI and SHRM Workflex Focus Conference slated for Oct. 28-30, 2013, in San Francisco.
