The deadline is approaching for the second public review and comment period on the draft of the Workforce Planning HR standard for the United States, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) announced.

The review and comment period ends Dec. 17, 2012. This draft standard is among the latest in a group of standards being created by task forces that SHRM is overseeing under the auspices of American National Standards Institute (ANSI). In 2009, ANSI designated SHRM as the official body to develop national-level operating standards in 12 HR function areas.

The Workforce Planning standard, written by a task force of HR professionals and experts, is created to help employers determine their future hiring needs, according to SHRM.

The standard is a series of calculations and analysis that HR professionals may use to properly assess the use and deployment of human assets in their organizations. It incorporates comments received from the public during the first public review and comment period, which ended March 11, 2012.

Once standards have passed through public review and been adopted by ANSI, they will be available for free to the public on the SHRM website, with a fee for printed copies.

Lee S. Webster, SHRM’s HR standards director, has noted in previous SHRM Online news reports that the standards provide consistent methodologies and a common approach that HR professionals can voluntarily adopt. The Cost-Per-Hire Standard that ANSI approved in April 2012, for example, can be used by organizations to determine employee recruitment costs. Businesses are not required to follow these standards.

Questions about the proposed draft standard or how to submit comments may be directed to Eddice Douglas at hrstds@shrm.org.
