In an effort to generate more public comments about the proposed launch of a self-service portal for the federal government’s electronic employment verification system, known as E-Verify, officials with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Feb. 18, 2014, that they were extending the comment period for 30 days—until March 20.
The DHS announced in the Nov. 21, 2013, edition of the Federal Register that a new self-service portal, called myE-Verify, was being developed and was set to go live before the end of 2014. According to the DHS announcement, myE-Verify will allow workers to input data directly into the E-Verify system to ensure that information on their eligibility to work in the United States is accurate. The features and services of myE-Verify will be free, and individuals who use the new system will be able to create secure user accounts so that they can verify and correct information when needed.
According to the DHS announcement, comments should focus on one or more of the following points:
*Whether the proposed collection of information is necessary for the proper performance of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) functions, including whether the information will have a practical use.
*The accuracy of the government’s estimate of the burden of providing and collecting the information.
*The quality, utility and clarity of the information to be collected.
*The burden of information collection on those who respond, including through the use of appropriate ways to collect the information, for example, allowing online and electronic submissions.
Comments or suggestions can be submitted via e-mail to the Office of Management and Budget’s USCIS Desk Officer at email@example.com. Comments may also be sent via the DHS federal e-rulemaking website at http://www.regulations.gov under the docket number USCIS-2010-0014 or via e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org. All submissions must include the agency’s name and the control number 1615-0117.
