The U.S. Senate confirmed Jenny Yang as a member of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) on April 25, 2013.
Yang fills the vacancy created in April 2012 when Stuart Ishimaru resigned to become head of the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. With Yang’s confirmation, the EEOC has a full contingent of five commissioners.
Before being appointed to the EEOC, Yang was a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Cohen Milstein and served as chair of the law firm’s hiring and diversity committee.
While at Cohen Milstein, Yang was one of the attorneys who represented 1.5 million women in the Wal-Mart Stores Inc. v. Dukes sex-discrimination class action. She also represented more than 28,000 female employees in the class action Beck v. The Boeing Company. The case was settled for $72 million in 2004.
Before becoming a partner at Cohen Milstein, Yang was a senior trial attorney in the Civil Rights division of the U.S. Department of Justice. The New York University School of Law graduate has a bachelor’s degree in government from Cornell University.
