SHRM Certification to launch mobile app and exams in Spanish
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) will launch a certification mobile app for iOS and Android devices and pilot Spanish-language versions of the SHRM Certification exams for the 2016 winter exam period, SHRM announced June 19.
The app for iOS devices is expected in coming months, followed later by an app for Android devices. The Spanish-language versions of the SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) and SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) exams is expected to be offered annually.
SHRM made the announcements during a press briefing on the opening day of its 2016 Annual Conference & Exposition, being held in Washington, D.C. In other SHRM Certification news, the global HR organization announced that it will:
*Make available a new version of the SHRM Learning System for SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP in December 2017 that will provide an online learning experience that includes multimedia content to help people prepare for the exam.
*Automatically upload professional development credits, for recertification, from SHRM conferences, seminars and e-learning courses to the accounts of individuals holding SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certification
Additionally, the Body of Competency and Knowledge (BoCK), which documents the nine behavioral and technical competencies on which the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certifications are based, will serve as a career development road map for HR professionals. There will be more interactivity and learning resources tied to competencies and sub-competencies.
“We are expanding the BoCK in future iterations by adding developmental opportunities best suited for gaining proficiency,” Alexander Alonso, Ph.D., SHRM-SCP, SHRM’s senior vice president of knowledge development, told SHRM Conference Today. “There is also a corollary professional development road map we will be finalizing in the next few months.”
Individuals taking the competency-based exams will receive feedback in the form of a chart indicating how they fared in behavioral competencies and the four domains of HR expertise—people, organization, workplace and strategy.
This feedback helps those taking the exam by providing them insight into their strengths and weaknesses, Alonso said.
Wayne F. Cascio, Ph.D., SHRM Certification Commission chairman, called the feedback “a high-quality assessment” that is developmental in nature. Cascio has served as president of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. He has written or edited 27 books on HR management and in 2013 received the Michael R. Losey Human Resource Research Award from SHRM.
“Employers want to see what you can do,” Cascio said of competency-based certification. Just as in being tested on how to drive, he explained, “you not only need to take a written test, but you also have to show you can operate the vehicle. The ability to do, not just the ability to know, is crucial.”
Henry G. “Hank” Jackson, SHRM president and CEO, noted the importance of making sure every HR professional is prepared to lead.
“For HR, competency—not just competency in [performing] HR but competency to lead business—that’s what I think the challenge is for HR today,” he said.
SHRM began offering the competency-based certifications for HR professionals in 2015, with the first exam given during the May-July 2015 testing window. The SHRM-CP has a 69 percent pass rate and the SHRM-SCP exam has a 55 percent pass rate, according to SHRM.
Since 2015, 92,110 individuals have become SHRM-certified. In the 15 months SHRM Certification has been available, 1,750 organizations have signed on to become SHRM recertification providers and 250 educational institutions have committed to serving as exam preparatory partners. Alonso also noted that, according to job posting metrics, approximately 5,000 job postings per month include SHRM certification as a requirement of applicants.
SHRM earlier launched the eLearning Library, which allows credential-holders to obtain up to one-half of their 60 recertification credits online.
