Last week the SHRM-led employer coalition, the Partnership to Protect Workplace Opportunity, sent a letter cosigned by 164 state, local, and national organizations urging Congress to implore the U.S. Department of Labor to reconsider its proposed overtime changes.
Labor Secretary Tom Perez (pictured) recently said in an interview with Bloomberg that he is “confident” that the final rule will be issued by spring 2016, which is slightly ahead of the July 2016 timeframe outlined in the Department’s Fall 2015 Semiannual Regulatory Agenda. While deadlines like this can slip due to the sensitivities of these regulations, HR professionals should begin to prepare for a final announcement by the Obama administration before summer.
Regardless of when this final rule is announced, HR professionals are likely to experience a fast turnaround before the rule is made effective. You may also wish to send a message to your lawmakers in Congress, sharing your views on the potential impact the revised overtime regulations may have on your organization!
