The Fate of DACA Coming to a Head in the House

On Thursday, June 7, House Republicans discussed the likelihood of a compromise on the Deferred Action for Childhood (DACA) program, border security solutions and possible cuts to legal immigration programs like the Diversity Visa lottery and family-sponsored immigration categories. While Republican leaders are promising a compromise for the GOP next week, failure to reach a compromise would increase the likelihood that an additional handful of Republicans could turn to support a discharge petition to force the House leadership to bring up immigration bills through a series of votes known as the "Queen-of-the-Hill rule" forward at the earliest June 25.

Under this scenario, four bills that propose different solutions for DACA recipients and DACA eligible individuals would go to the House floor for a vote, should the House schedule remain on track.  SHRM and its affiliate the Council for Global Immigration are members of the Coalition for the American Dream which supports a non-partisan solution that strengthens our economy and increases our security.

In the meantime, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has embarked on a robust enforcement focus, planning a surge of workplace audits this summer. In the first seven months of fiscal year 2018, the number of audits is double the number of audits from all of fiscal year 2017, which is consistent with the agency's earlier pledges to quadruple worksite enforcement. SHRM's upcoming webinar can help ensure you are compliant with the I-9 process.
