HR professionals from throughout California will convene in Sacramento April 8-10 to take part in CalSHRM’s 2015 California State Legislative and HR Conference. Attendees will have an opportunity to hear from acclaimed speakers on such topics as ACA compliance, the impact of proposed immigration reform on California employers, and how to build workflex strategies in California.

Assembly Member Brian Jones (R-Santee) will be presenting on the power of advocacy and how to make your HR voice heard in the California legislature. Retired Col. David W. Sutherland (U.S. Army), chairman of the Easter Seals Dixon Center, and chief strategist for Easter Seals Military and Veterans Services, will also lead a panel discussion about the hiring of military veterans and what actions California employers can take to help increase the veteran employment rate.

On April 9, attendees will visit with their state representatives at the State Capitol and advocate on HR issues. Specifically, they will voice their support for AB 1038, which would permit a nonexempt employee to request an alternative schedule of up to 10 hours a day within a 40-hour workweek, and AB 1383, which would allow private employers to voluntarily provide a preference to veterans in hiring. In addition, attendees will discuss CalSHRM’s opposition to SB 406, which would subject small employers to the California Family Rights Act (CFRA) and would add complexity and uncertainty for employers that navigate between CFRA and its federal counterpart, the Family and Medical Leave Act.

The conference will end with a keynote presentation by Jon Ortiz, the state-worker reporter for The Sacramento Bee. Ortiz will be presenting on the troubles that companies face when HR policies breakdown. This year’s conference is a can’t miss event for anyone interested in learning more about ever-changing employment laws and current legislative issues in California, as well as the role of HR practitioners and business leaders in these unique times.
