NC SHRM Members Canvas the Capitol in Raleigh

By Bob Carragher May 24, 2017

On May 10, nearly 80 HR professionals participated in North Carolina SHRM's (NC SHRM's) "Day in the District" in Raleigh.

State Representative Duane Hall (D-11) addressed the group about what it's like to serve as a member of the North Carolina General Assembly. NC SHRM's government affairs director–east Connie Carrigan, J.D., and Bob Carragher, SHRM's senior advisor for state affairs, co-hosted an advocacy dialogue during which they reviewed how to conduct a meeting with a legislator and provided an overview of the issues members could discuss in their meetings. Participants then traveled to the North Carolina State Capitol complex and met with legislators, sharing NC SHRM's positions on such issues as "ban-the-box" (background checks), workplace flexibility, nondiscrimination in the workplace and the skills shortage.

Pictured are some of the members who participated in the state advocacy day with NC SHRM. Participants described the role HR plays in workplaces throughout the state in their meetings with legislators and staff, and offered to serve as resources for legislators when the General Assembly considers workplace issues impacting North Carolina employees and employers.
