As part of SHRM's "Year of Advocacy," staff members of SHRM and the Council for Global Immigration (CFGI), led by President and CEO Hank Jackson, attended the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia after attending the Republican National Convention in Cleveland the previous week. SHRM was the only human resources organization attending these events, representing 285,000 SHRM members.
Throughout the conventions, SHRM and CFGI highlighted their recently released guiding principles for a 21st Century Workplace, which convey the importance of public-policy principles that create workplaces that are innovative, fair and competitive. Additionally, these principles will be shared with all members of Congress, as well as with both presidential campaigns in the months ahead.
At the national conventions, SHRM and CFGI partnered with moderate Republican and Democratic organizations in order to elevate SHRM's brand, advance important HR public-policy priorities and showcase SHRM as a thought leader on key workplace issues. Partnership events will give SHRM members unique access to the political process and demonstrate the expertise of the HR profession. Continuing SHRM's 2016 National Visibility Campaign, media partners will showcase SHRM's commercial during the conventions and throughout 2016.
SHRM members in the Cleveland, Philadelphia and New Jersey participated in special SHRM member engagement events that will bring together over 300 SHRM members at each location. Jackson led a SHRM town hall meeting, followed by a public-policy presentation by SHRM Vice President of Government Affairs Mike Aitken. The events were livestreamed on SHRM's Facebook page.
SHRM and CFGI provided real-time election coverage of the conventions through social media channels and via the SHRM and CFGI websites. Daily blogs, HR News articles and Twitter action provided unique access to this important political process. Aitken's inaugural blog post, "SHRM and CFGI Prepare for RNC and DNC Conventions" kicked off the convention experience.
During the conventions and throughout the remainder of the year, be sure to get involved in the policy process through SHRM's Policy Action Center. The Policy Action Center provides important resources regarding voting information, presidential candidate platforms and SHRM's position on a variety of workplace issues.
