With the warm weather and the kids out of school, the summer months are peak vacation and activity times for most U.S. workers. Many employees are looking to ramp-up their workplace flexibility during the summer, and organizations are responding to employees' needs by implementing summertime flextime policies to improve employee satisfaction and engagement.

SHRM and the Families and Work Institute's When Work Works initiative recently announced the winners of the When Work Works Awards, which honor organizations that are creating effective workplaces and using flexibility as a strategy to make work "work" better for businesses and employees. For several winners, offering summer hours has been tremendously successful, with employers reporting increased employee happiness and retention. Here's a brief overview on what some winners are doing for summertime flextime:

  • KPMG LLP USA offers a "Summer Weekend Jumpstart Program" that gives employees the opportunity to make 3:00 p.m. their normal departure time every Friday during the summer.

  • Louis T. Roth & Co. PLLC in Louisville, Ky., offers flex Fridays during the summer months, wherein employees are eligible to take every other Friday off from May through August.

  • Bader Martin P.S. in Seattle officially closes the office on Fridays from mid-May to mid-August.

  • IEEE in Piscataway, N.J., and Hillcrest Family Services in Dubuque, Iowa, offer summer flextime hours where employees are allowed to adjust their schedules during the summer months.

A flexible summer work schedule has proven to be a hit with these winners; could it work for your organization? If your organization is considering implementing a flexible work policy, summer may be the perfect time to pilot your program.
