The purpose of the 2013 State of Employee Benefits in the Workplace series is to determine what types of benefits organizations currently offer and how they leverage these benefits to recruit and retain employees. The series consists of the following six parts: 1) wellness initiatives, 2) flexible work arrangements, 3) health care, 4) leveraging benefits to retain employees, 5) leveraging benefits to recruit employees, and 6) communicating benefits.
Although many organizations reported having difficulty recruiting and retaining employees, the use of the benefits package as a tool to attract and keep talent was not widespread. As the economic climate improves, organization that are not able to offer competitive salaries may want to consider a “total rewards” approach to attracting top talent. With ongoing increases in health care costs and many financially unprepared workers soon to be exiting the workforce, an organization’s benefits program may serve as a valuable tool in recruiting and retaining the needed talent.
