LinkedIn Tops List of Best Places for IT Workers

Computerworld’s 21st annual 100 Best Places to Work in IT for 2014 is out and among those on the list are Quicken Loans, Coca-Cola Enterprises, LinkedIn and Noah Consulting. 

The magazine states that it chose the top U.S. workplaces for technology professionals based on benefits, training and what matters most to IT professionals.

Winner categories are based on size—large: 5,000 or more employees; midsize: 1,000 to 4,999 employees; and small: fewer than 1,000 employees.

The top five large companies:

  1. Quicken Loans, which “created an in-house ‘university’ just for IT,” according to Computerworld.
  2. United Services Automobile Association, whose benefits include Starbucks and a child care center onsite.
  3. General Mills, which gives employees a company-funded pension plan.
  4. Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants, which counts conflict resolution among the soft skills it teaches employees.
  5. DHL Express, which trains IT employees to be customer-centric.
The top five midsize companies:

  1. LinkedIn, which offers its employees time off for innovation or what it calls “InDays.”
  2. Credit Acceptance Corporation, where shared IT-specific values unify colleagues.
  3. MasterCard, which holds a competition called Innovation Express to inspire its IT staff.
  4. Informatica, which gives IT employees 16 days of training annually.
  5. Johnsonville Sausage, where staff is “empowered to try new technologies,” Computerworld wrote on its website.
The top five small companies:

  1. Noah Consulting, a virtual firm whose “strong culture connects IT staff,” according to Computerworld.
  2. University HealthSystem Consortium, which compensates IT staffers for the tech certifications they receive.
  3. Sev1Tech, which fosters teamwork with “robust communications tools.”
  4. Coca-Cola Enterprises, whose diversity plan helps minorities and women get ahead.
  5. Commonwealth Financial Network, whose “agile work environment energizes IT.”
