The California State Council of SHRM (CalSHRM) 2017 California State Legislative and HR Conference, held April 19-21 in Sacramento, brought key HR decision-makers, HR business partners and senior-level HR officers together to learn about important state and federal legislative and employment issues with an impact on business, now and in the future.
Focused on developing the HR Expertise technical competency, specifically in the area of California employment, the conference also fully supported the key behavioral competencies of Leadership & Navigation and Consultation. Understanding the complexities of California's unique employment environment and its interrelation with federal law is key for HR professionals.
The CalSHRM conference gathered acclaimed employment law attorneys, national speakers and SHRM experts at the podium to deliver powerful presentations on ever-changing employment laws and legislative issues and the roles of HR practitioners and business leaders.
Attendees had the opportunity to visit the State Capitol and meet with legislators to enlighten them on issues affecting employees and employers in California.
This year's robust agenda of sessions provided expertise and knowledge, as well as solutions and suggestions for practical application. Session titles included "Managing the Internal Whistle Blower: Policies and Practices to Avoid Claims of Retaliation"; "How to Avoid 10 Common Employer Mistakes When Conducting an Investigation"; "Supervisors, Your Most Important Liability"; "Employee Privacy Rights: How Far Do They Go?"; "So You Want to Do the Right Thing, But Is It Legal?"; and "HR's Role in Avoiding a $10M Lawsuit," among many more.
