Recertification Q&A: Activity IDs, Prorated PDCs

Have questions about recertifying your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP? In every issue, the SHRM Certification team will answer some of the frequently asked questions they receive from credential-holders.

Q. I went to a professional development event but I don't have an activity ID. How do I get credit for my attendance?

A. While having an ID makes entering professional development credits (PDCs) into your SHRM Certification Portal simpler, you can still enter an activity into the portal manually. First, make sure you can demonstrate that the activity is aligned to the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge (SHRM BoCK). Second, calculate your eligible PDCs by consulting the instructions for doing so in the SHRM Recertification Requirements Handbook. Finally, save any relevant documentation verifying your attendance at or participation in the activity—you will have to present it if you are randomly selected for verification review.

Q: Are PDC amounts earned in the Advance your Education category prorated?

A: There is a 1-hour minimum for an educational activity to have credit. Once that minimum is met, SHRM calculates PDCs in 15-minute increments according to the actual time spent in the activity. Examples: A program that lasts 1 hour will be awarded 1 PDC; a program that lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes will be awarded 1.25 PDCs.
