Recertification Q&A: Clarifying Categories of Credits

By the SHRM Certification Team September 12, 2019

Have questions about recertifying your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP? In every issue, the SHRM Certification team will answer some of the frequently asked questions they receive from credential-holders.

Q: Do the three categories of professional development credits (PDCs)—Advance Your Education, Advance Your Organization and Advance Your Profession—require specific amounts of credits for recertification? Will I need PDCs in each category to recertify?

A: There is no minimum PDC requirement in any of the three categories. However, there are maximum limits for two of the categories:

  • Advance Your Organization, the category focused on work projects completed on the job, has a maximum of 20 PDCs.
  • Advance Your Profession, the category focused on volunteer activities (including professional memberships; public speaking; and research, writing and publishing), has a maximum of 30 PDCs.

There is no maximum in Advance Your Education, allowing you to earn all 60 PDCs in this category. This category covers instructor-led or self-paced continuing education activities, including conferences, seminars, workshops, chapter programs, college and university courses, books and e-books, webcasts, and e-learning.

See more details about qualifying activities in each category here. Within these guidelines, there is plenty of room for the creative distribution of recertification credits.

Q: Do I need specific strategic or business recertification credits?

A:  No. SHRM's recertification requirements support individual credential-holders' ability to determine their own professional development paths, based on their specific needs and career goals.
