Recertification Q&A: Does This Activity Count?

Answers to frequently asked questions about maintaining your credential

By the SHRM Certification Team October 11, 2018

Have questions about recertifying your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credential? Twice a month, the SHRM Certification team will answer some of the frequently asked questions they receive from certification holders.

Q. If a professional development activity is not preapproved by SHRM, how do I know if it will qualify for professional development credits (PDCs)?

A. The easiest way to make sure that a course or activity is eligible for credit is to look for the SHRM Recertification Provider seal. SHRM's preapproved providers offer tens of thousands of recertification opportunities for you to choose from, virtually and in person. Many are listed on the SHRM Certification Portal. To claim PDCs from a provider that has not been preapproved by SHRM, you will need to be able to show that the course material or activity relates to the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge™ (SHRM BoCK™). You may also contact for further help with validation.

Q: Must I enter PDCs from each of the three categories (Advance Your Education, Advance Your Organization, Advance Your Profession) to recertify?

A: No. For example, certificants may recertify by entering all 60 PDCs in the Advance Your Education category. Please note, however, that the other two categories have credit limits:

  • Advance Your Organization: capped at a maximum of 20 PDCs.
  • Advance Your Profession: capped at a maximum of 30 PDCs.
