Have questions about recertifying your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP? In every issue, the SHRM Certification team will answer some of the frequently asked questions they receive from credential holders.

Q: How many kinds of educational and training activities are eligible for SHRM recertification credit?

A: Because SHRM recognizes the value of professional development through lifelong learning, as well as the need for different learning formats suited to different individuals, a wide variety of educational and training activities qualify for professional development credits (PDCs) under the Advance Your Education category.

  • Instructor-led activities include continuing education programs (such as continuing legal education), undergraduate or graduate courses from accredited college or university degree programs, conferences, seminars, workshops, and e-learning programs.
  • Self-paced activities include e-learning, videoconferences, webcasts, books and e-books.

Consult the SHRM Recertification Requirements Handbook for details on each kind of activity.

Q: How do I determine if an educational or training activity is eligible for SHRM recertification credit?

A: Three main criteria determine whether an educational or training activity is eligible for PDCs. The activity must provide:

  • Formal and structured learning.
  • Content aligned to the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge.
  • A minimum of one hour of instruction, which does not include time spent on noneducational activities (welcomes, introductions, breaks, meals, exhibits, networking, etc.).

Q: Is there is limit to the number of PDCs I can use for educational and training activities?

A: No, there is no limit. You can earn all 60 PDCs in the Advance Your Education category.
