Recertification Q&A: Self-Paced Educational Activities

Answers to frequently asked questions about maintaining your credential

By the SHRM Certification Team June 14, 2018

Have questions about recertifying your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credential? Twice a month, the SHRM Certification team will answer some of the frequently asked questions they receive from certification holders.

Q:  Do self-paced educational activities qualify for recertification credit?

A:  Yes, the "Advance Your Education" category includes all educational activities. Self-paced activities include webcasts, videoconferences, e-learning and books/e-books. These activities max out at 30 professional development credits (PDCs) per three-year recertification cycle.

Q:  What is the difference between virtual learning and self-paced e-learning programs?

A:  Virtual learning (instructor-led) programs require a live instructor, as well as real-time interaction and engagement with the instructor and other students. A program that includes a Q&A session, in and of itself, is not considered an instructor-led event. Watching prerecorded content is not considered virtual learning (instructor-led), as these programs do not have real-time interaction or engagement with a live instructor or other participants.

Q:  Do I have to buy books from the SHRMStore to receive credits for reading them?

A:  No, you can buy books identified on the pre-approved list in the SHRMStore from any vendor; however, the related quiz must be completed in the SHRM eLearning platform.
