Recertification Q&A: Verification Review, Audited Courses

Have questions about SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP recertification? In every issue, the SHRM Certification team will answer questions they often receive from credential-holders.

Q: What happens if my recertification application is selected for a verification review?

A: To protect the integrity of the SHRM certification program, a percentage of recertification applications will be randomly selected for review to verify the activities listed for professional development credits (PDCs). With this in mind, you should document your recertification activities and retain these records for up to six months after the end of your three-year recertification period. The SHRM Recertification Requirements Handbook outlines the kinds of documentation required to verify each recertification category.

Q: Is recertification documentation stored or available in the SHRM Certification Portal online?

A: For the Advance Your Education and Advance Your Profession recertification categories, documentation is not stored in the portal. For the Advance Your Organization recertification category, documentation is required when entering the activity, so it is available in the portal. SHRM will ask you for documentation only if you are randomly selected for verification review.

Q: I audited a course at the local university. Can I get PDCs even though I didn't get college credit or a grade?

A: Yes. If the content of the course aligns to the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge, you may be awarded recertification credit. You can earn up to 10 PDCs per three-year certification cycle for audited, ungraded or noncredit courses.
