Have questions about recertifying your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credential? Twice a month, the SHRM Certification team will answer some of the frequently asked questions they receive from certification holders.


Q: What are the requirements for recertification credit for volunteering activities? 

A: An eligible volunteering activity must occur in an HR services role, without compensation, and must be for an HR association, HR membership organization or other nonprofit. If you have a specific volunteering activity that you'd like to have reviewed, please e-mail for assistance. 

Q: I'm retiring from the profession. Am I able to retain my credential? 

A: Yes. To be eligible for retired status, a credential-holder must be fully retired from the profession. This means that they cannot be doing part-time HR work (e.g., consulting, teaching). Please send your e-mail request to for assistance.
