Start the New Year 'Write'

Submit an article recounting your situational judgment and HR competence

By the SHRM Certification Update team January 10, 2019

Calling all SHRM-certified writers!

SHRM Certification Update is launching a new series of short articles that illustrate everyday applications of the SHRM-defined competencies, and we're seeking contributors. Tell us about an HR-related incident you've dealt with, and explain how a particular competency enabled you to deal with it. Think of your article as a situational judgment question from the SHRM certification exam—but one that's not hypothetical and, instead, from your own experience.

Articles submitted for consideration should be written in an accessible, informative style—not too technical or promotional—and be no more than 1,000 words. Send them via e-mail to We will answer all inquiries and work with you to develop a great piece.

And yes, your submission may qualify for professional development credits (PDCs)! See this issue's Recertification Q&A or consult the SHRM Recertification Requirements Handbook about this activity.

All Ideas Welcome!

The Update is e-mailed twice monthly to SHRM-CPs and SHRM-SCPs and others who want to learn more about HR certification and the SHRM certification program. We are always looking for well-written articles. Here are a few suggested topics:

  • Insights you've gained from being SHRM-certified.
  • Practical tips you can share.
  • Recertification goals and advice.
  • How your SHRM certification helped you:
    • Get a promotion
    • Acquire new business or a new client
    • Build a relationship.
  • What your local SHRM chapter or state council is doing to support SHRM certification.
  • How you're preparing (as a SHRM-CP) to take the SHRM-SCP exam.

We look forward to hearing from you! Send your draft articles to the SHRM Certification Update at
