YPAC seeks nominations

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is seeking five emerging professionals (EPs) interested in volunteer leadership opportunities.

The Young Professional (Emerging Professionals) Advisory Council serves the interests of SHRM members who are new HR professionals.

The 10-member council includes two representatives from each of SHRM's five regions: North Central, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and Pacific West. Council members serve two-year terms.

Members meet virtually on a monthly basis; one or two of those meetings are held in conjunction with the SHRM Annual Conference & Expo.

Applicants must be SHRM members age 35 or younger, must hold a bachelor's degree related to HR, must have held an HR or related position for three to five years, and preferably have experience as a SHRM student chapter leader. Being SHRM-certified and professionally active on social media are pluses. Applicants also should be interested in guiding the next generation of leaders toward pursuing their purpose within the world of HR.

Council involvement offers leadership, speaking and travel opportunities, including attending the SHRM Annual Conference & Expo 2022 in New Orleans, according to Kevin Abbed, member engagement associate at SHRM.

The council:

  • Provides feedback or suggestions to SHRM on potential and existing services and experiences for the betterment of emerging professionals within the SHRM community.
  • Assists SHRM with identifying strategies for gaining and retaining EP members.
  • Encourages recognition of EP programs led by chapter and state council affiliates.
  • Connects with other EP members using social media and various local events and activities.
  • Promotes and coordinates the establishment and support of activities at the local level, as well as strategies that help SHRM student members transition from school into the workforce as emerging professionals.

Five members shared career advice in the panel discussion session "What I Wish I Knew—Emerging Professional Insights" at the SHRM Annual Conference & Expo 2021 in Las Vegas.

"This council would be a perfect opportunity to grow in leadership," said panelist Rebecca Rowe, SHRM-CP, director of HR at Behrens Manufacturing, headquartered in Winona, Minn. She also advised individuals who belong to a local SHRM chapter to look for opportunities to serve on its board, noting "it provides not only the networking but growth opportunities."

The application deadline is Dec. 17
