Best-selling author Martin Yate, a career coach and former HR professional, takes your questions each week about how to further your career in HR. Contact him at the e-mail address at the end of this column.
I have a master's degree in information systems and a human resources management certificate. I hold the SHRM-CP and PHRi certifications, and I'm currently working to advance my career by preparing to take the SHRM-SCP certification exam. I have three and a half years of experience, all of which is in the HR field only. I'm wondering how best to pursue my professional and ongoing education.
As a member of the Society for Human Resource Management, you have full access to one of the most comprehensive professional support websites in existence. I cannot think of an HR-related topic that is not addressed on the
SHRM Online website, with the editorial team really deep-diving into many of these topics. Plus, at the bottom of every page there are links for chat or e-mail and telephone numbers to call for further advice.
Try visiting the website an hour a night and study several pages each time. For those topics you already know, you get a brush up, and for those topics you don't know, you get a fast education. In the process, you will become much better educated on the full spectrum of HR competencies. Then scan the virtual and in-person seminars and conferences that SHRM offers to fill in any gaps and keep you up to date. This is where your professional education journey begins!
Have a question for Martin? E-mail your queries to YourCareerQA@shrm.org. We'll only publish your first name and city, unless you prefer to remain anonymous—just let us know. We look
forward to hearing from you!
