E-Verify Gets Its Own Website

​E-Verify users have a brand-new online destination to bookmark.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that the federal government's electronic employment eligibility verification system has a dedicated website for the first time.

Previously, information about E-Verify was spread across the USCIS.gov site.

E-Verify.gov is now the authoritative source for information about E-Verify and Form I-9 employment eligibility verification. It includes employee rights and employer responsibilities in the employment verification process, allows employers to enroll in E-Verify directly, and permits current users to access their accounts. Employees with my E-Verify accounts can also access their accounts through the site. The site contains system updates, news, webinars, performance and usage statistics, reports, frequently asked questions, and a participating employer search tool.

"For the past decade, E-Verify has been the cornerstone of our continued commitment to helping employers maintain a legal workforce," said USCIS Director L. Francis Cissna. "E-Verify.gov now allows users to better understand and navigate through the employment verification process."

Employers can access E-Verify anytime, directly from a web browser. The tool compares data from an employee's Form I-9 with information from the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration, and can often confirm employment eligibility instantly or within 24 hours, according to USCIS.

E-Verify is a voluntary program for most employers, with nearly 800,000 enrolled so far. However, employers with federal contracts or subcontracts that contain the Federal Acquisition Regulation E-Verify clause are required to enroll in E-Verify as a condition of federal contracting. Employers may also be required to participate in E-Verify if their states have legislation mandating the use of it, such as a condition of business licensing.

The Trump administration has encouraged all U.S. employers to verify all new hires through the system and supports legislation for mandatory use nationwide.
