Nearly $2 million in grants is being awarded through the Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations program, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) announced June 25, 2014.

The initiative is for recruiting, training and retaining women in high-skill occupations in advanced manufacturing, transportation, energy, construction, information technology and other industries, the DOL said in a news release.

The $1,938,182 in grants is going to:

  • Chicago Women in Trades ($642,686).
  • Nontraditional Employment for Women in New York City ($647,748).
  • Oregon Tradeswomen Inc., in Portland ($647,748).

Funds will be used to develop regional multistate technical assistance resource centers to remove barriers for women entering nontraditional occupations. The centers will provide services such as:

  • Developing connections between the centers and pre-apprenticeship programs in their areas to prepare women for Registered Apprenticeship programs.
  • Orientations on creating a successful environment for women in apprenticeships.
  • Assistance with child care and transportation, as well as through support groups.

“Creating opportunities for women to gain the training and experience needed to compete for skilled jobs is critical to our nation’s future,” said Portia Wu, assistant secretary of labor for employment and training, in a news release.

The federal funding, she added, “will go to organizations that are working to break down barriers for women in nontraditional fields and will help them enter Registered Apprenticeship programs that lead to long-term employment and middle class wages.”

The grants are jointly administered by the department’s Women’s Bureau and its Office of Apprenticeship. For information about the department’s range of employment and training programs, visit http://www.doleta.gov/.
