States reported that 230,000 workers filed for new unemployment benefits during the week ending Jan. 8, an increase of 23,000 from last week's revised level. The total number of workers continuing to claim unemployment benefits, at 1.5 million, has fallen well under its pre-pandemic average of 1.7 million.
The latest monthly employment report for December showed the unemployment rate falling to 3.9 percent, the lowest level since February 2020. The labor market still has some distance to go to reach full employment however, with slowing payroll gains and the size of the labor force still down by more than 2 million people compared to pre-pandemic levels.
