States reported that 201,000 workers filed for new unemployment benefits during the week ending Sept. 16, a decrease of 20,000 from last week's revised level. Weekly unemployment figures remain at normal levels despite high interest rates and inflation.

About 1.6 million workers continue to claim unemployment benefits, down from a recent high of 1.86 million in mid-April. The unemployment rate unexpectedly rose in August to 3.8 percent from 3.5 percent in July, the highest since February 2022. The increase is attributed to a significant rise in labor force participation.
