​Videoconferencing company Zoom will now offer end-to-end encryption to customers of both its free and premium services, a reversal of its decision to restrict access for some users.

Privacy vs. Safety

Zoom CEO Eric Yuan had previously been reluctant to offer end-to-end encryption for all users in order to comply more easily with law enforcement access requests, upsetting privacy advocates. "We are pleased to share that we have identified a path forward that balances the legitimate right of all users to privacy and the safety of users on our platform," he said. "We also want to work together with FBI, with local law enforcement in case some people use Zoom for a bad purpose."
