​There are a few exceptions to the rule that employees must be paid overtime when they work more than 40 hours in a week. One is the executive exemption, a white-collar exemption to the Fair Labor Standards Act’s (FLSA’s) overtime requirements

Job titles aren’t enough to determine exempt status. So while a manager might not seem like an executive, he or she nevertheless might be covered by the executive exemption―but only if he or she meets all of the exemption requirements. A manager at a store who works the cash register regularly and has little say about hiring or firing would not be covered, for example. But another manager whose primary duties consist of overseeing the store and who has the authority to hire and fire might be.
