What is Member Generated Content?
This "members only" section provides a way for SHRM members to create and share timely, relevant content from an HR professional's perspective incorporating current real-time situations and scenarios, contribute to the SHRM community, and support one another by sharing effective practices in the HR profession with other SHRM members.  Articles will be highlighted by HR topic area and industry.

All content and information available under the Member2Member Solutions is generated solely by SHRM members.  Content posted on Member2Member Solutions is solely the opinion of the individual contributor, and SHRM does not endorse any opinions expressed in or through Member2Member Solutions.  SHRM makes no representations or warranties as to the truthfulness, accuracy, reliability, completeness, timeliness or compliance with applicable laws of any of the content posted, displayed, or linked to under Member2Member Solutions.

How is this different than posting on SHRMConnect or other social media sites?
This is a more formalized way for SHRM members to share effective practices.  SHRMConnect is a great channel to have discussions around a particular topic, and therefore it may be helpful to include a link between Member Generated Content and SHRMConnect for further discussions.

Recertification

Can I get SHRM recertification credit for submitting an entry?
Yes, provided your entry is approved by SHRM and meets a few parameters as outlined in the SHRM Recertification Requirements Handbook. The credits would fall under "Researching, Writing & Publishing" in the Advance Your Profession category.

To qualify under the recertification handbook parameters, your submission must be related to the SHRM BoCK, include at least 750 words, not be solely opinion-based, include factual information and data analysis and include at least one reference to an external resource.  Included in the submission form is a word count function which will allow you to easily track if you have met the 750 word requirement.

As always, retain a copy of your submission for your records should you be audited.

How many Professional Development Credits (PDCs) would I be able to earn for an approved submission?
You may claim .5 PDCs for each submission that meets the defined criteria and is approved.  Up to 2 PDCs may be earned per year.

Writing an Article

How do I select a topic?
Topics should be based upon your knowledge/experience and related to your work as an HR practitioner.  The content should be relevant and of interest to your peers.  It must include factual information and data analysis.  It should not be solely opinion-based.  Keep in mind the SHRM BoCK and incorporate your learnings/experiences based on the SHRM competencies.

How long should the article be?

It should be long enough to convey your message. If you want to submit your article for SHRM recertification credit, it must be a minimum of 750 words.

How should I format my article?
Here are tips from SHRM's Editorial team on how to write an article:

Writing an online article or case study for your HR peers is a little different from writing a report for your vice president or an email to your colleagues. It's more akin to writing a news article—something we do in the SHRM Editorial Department every day. Borrowing from our journalistic training, we are sharing some tips to help you organize your thoughts and present your information in a clear and easily understood way.

  • Start with an outline. Let's say you are writing a case study on how you reduced your time to hire by 10 percent in order to rectify a budget shortfall. Think of the main events that happened to get to that reduction. Those are the main headers in your outline.
  • Add in bullet points under each header. These are the steps you took between each event to plan for, evaluate, communicate and then implement your strategy to reduce time to hire.
  • Fill in the gaps. Write up your case study, using the headers and bullet points as your guideposts. Create subheads in your case study that align with the headers in your outline, and, when appropriate, bullets to highlight the timeline and important information. This style is easy for readers to scan and quickly absorb the information. Add URLs to any articles on your website or coverage your company may have gotten. Link to SHRM resources as appropriate. Keep paragraphs to three or four sentences for better reader comprehension.
  • Reread your draft. Every news article has five W's and H. Have you stated:
    • Who—the name of your company and professionals in your HR department, as appropriate, who are charged with finding a solution to the problem in the case study.
    • What—your problem, which in this case is the company needed more revenue, quickly.
    • Why—any factors that led to the development of the problem and the reasoning for choosing the solution you selected.
    • When—the timeframe for the discovering the problem, crafting a strategy to solve it and implementing the strategy.
    • Where—not only your geographic location, but also the departments where the work was done, so your readers understand the scope of the work.
    • How—the solution to your problem, i.e., the methods you employed to reduce time to hire. 
      Go back and make sure these points are prominent and clearly stated. 
  • Reread your draft again. Is there a sentence near the beginning that captures the essence of your case study? In journalism, we call this the "nut graf." To help craft that sentence, picture yourself standing with your boss in an elevator. The elevator stops, and your boss steps out. Suddenly she turns back to you and says, "What's that case study about?" As the elevator doors close, you quickly and succinctly say, "To ramp up revenue, our company reduced our time to hire by 10 percent by focusing intently on our alumni and referrals."
  • Have a peer read your case study and offer feedback. Everyone benefits from an editor reviewing their work.
  • Make sure you have required permissions.  Confirm that you have the right to disclose and publish all information in your piece.  Remember, you are legally and ethically responsible for the content of your piece—so be sure you have all needed consents and authorizations to disclose, use and publish business information, plans, names, results, and material from any third party before you submit any content to SHRM.
  • Run spell check and grammar check. You have a copyeditor built in to your computer.

How should I cite sources in my article?
You are not required to use a specific citation format when citing sources in your article.  The most important thing is to ensure you are citing sources if you use content or ideas from sources that are not your own.  If you are SHRM certified and plan to get recertification credit for writing an article, you must include at least one reference to an external resource.

I have companion pieces that I want to share along with my article.  Can I include them?
Yes.  You have the capability to upload up to three pieces.  We will accept Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and PDF.

I created my article in Word and now want to copy and paste it into the submission form.  How do I do that?
Use the Control C function to copy text and Control V to paste into the submission form.

Submission Review Process

Do I have the option to save my submission if I'm not ready to send it yet?
Yes.  You do have the option to save your submission and come back to it at a later time.  You can access the saved version through your MySHRM section of SHRM.org

How long does the review process take?
Each submission is reviewed on a first come, first served basis by a SHRM staff member.  Generally it may take up to 10 business days for review and posting.

How can I check the status of my submission?
You will be notified by e-mail when the review process is complete or if there are any questions about your submission.  You can also track the status of your submission at any time in mySHRM.

What happens if my entry is rejected?
Our reviewers will provide feedback in the areas that prevented its approval. Through the submission tool, if you so choose, you will be able to make changes and resubmit.  SHRM does reserve the right to not publish a submission in its sole discretion, and all SHRM decisions are final.

How long will my entry be posted?
Generally documents may be posted up to 13 months. Depending on a document's popularity, this period of time may be extended.

Who owns the copyright on these entries?
As between you and SHRM, you own any content that you submit to Member2Member Solutions, and therefore you may share such content or make it available to others, although only SHRM members can view your submission via SHRM.org.  By using the Member2Member Solutions, you agree to grant to SHRM a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual license, with right to sublicense, reproduce, distribute, transmit, create derivate works of, publicly display and publicly perform any content, comments or other information that you provide through Member2Member Solutions by all means and in any media now known or hereafter developed for any use or purpose.  Similarly, any content, comments, or other information submitted through the Member2Member Solutions will be freely available to other members to use, copy, transmit, distribute, or otherwise publicly display by all means and in any media now known or hereafter developed for any use or purpose.

We may edit or make formatting changes to any content submitted (such as changing the size or file type to make the content usable in an online format).  However, we will strive to not materially modify the meaning of your content, comments, or any other information provided by you through Member2Member Solutions.  If SHRM determines that such a material change needs to be made, it may reject the submission and provide feedback about the areas that prevented its approval, as outlined above.

Additional Requirements
When submitting content, posting comments, or otherwise using Member2Member Solutions, remember that you can be held legally liable for what you write ("transmit" or "submit").  YOU MUST NOT submit content that:

  • Contains false, fraudulent, inaccurate, libelous, or otherwise misleading material
  • Promotes or advocates illegal activity
  • Contains the real names of individuals or organizations unless you are authorized and have permission to do so from such individuals/organizations
  • Infringes any other person's or entity's copyright, trademark, service mark, trade dress or privacy-related rights
  • Is intended to solicit employment, market products, solicit resumes, collect email addresses or conduct surveys
  • Contains material that is obscene or indecent; that defames any person, business, governmental or other entity, product or services; that constitutes discriminatory or hateful speech regarding age, gender, race, religion, nationality, sexual orientation or disability or any other category protected by law; or that harasses, threatens, abuses, embarrasses or causes distress, unwanted attention or discomfort to any other person or entity
  • Could reasonably be construed as a violation of federal, state or international law prohibiting anti-competitive activities or unfair trade practices.  For example, do not discuss detailed salary, wage or benefit pay by a company or industry, since such a discussion might fall outside of the FTC/DOJ safe harbor provisions for sharing of salary, wage and benefits information.
  • Is unprofessional or harmful to the image of the HR profession

By submitting content, posting comments, or otherwise using the Member2Member Solutions, you agree to do so solely for lawful purposes, in compliance with all applicable laws, and in a professional manner.  You agree that SHRM has no responsibility for or control over the content that you submit using Member2Member Solutions, and you further agree that you have the right to share all content provided by you.  In addition, by using Member2Member Solutions, you agree to release the Society For Human Resource Management and its advertisers from any liability arising from content transmitted by anyone through Member2Member Solutions, and you agree to release, hold harmless, indemnify and defend the Society for Human Resource Management and its advertisers from any and all legal or civil actions and penalties and costs, including without limitation attorneys' fees, arising from any Content you transmit.

Copyright Complaints

I read an entry that just doesn't seem right. Who should I contact?
That depends on what you perceive as "not right."  If someone posted their experience/opinion on a topic, please share your thoughts in the comments section underneath the document. If you come across something that you believe may be illegal or unethical, please email the Member Case Studies Team. If you believe that your work has been copied in a manner that constitutes copyright infringement, please notify SHRM's copyright agent following the procedures above.
