Learning and development is increasingly becoming a cross-functional skillset and everyone from core training professionals to sales territory managers are expected to design and deliver learning solutions, whether they are 30 minute nuggets shared in team huddles or more formal milestone programs facilitated over several days or blended interventions that attempt to leverage technology. Yet most individuals, even within the training industry, are not familiar with the robust discipline that informs the practice of learning design.

Instructional Design (ID) is the science of developing instructional materials and learning solutions to maximize retention, impact and effectiveness. It synthesizes a wide body of research about how people learn and how the mind works into a series of practical approaches and instructional frameworks. Following these approaches can enable the instructional designer to produce a solution in a planned and systematic way that directly targets business needs and learner profiles.

In this hands-on program, you will get foundation knowledge in instructional theories and use these to guide the process of design. We will walk you through the paradigm shifts in Instructional Design in the 21st century and teach you the nuances of creating a 'learnscpae' with a focus on newer instructional methods. You will practice developing a range of learning journey and also focus on evaluating learning effectiveness. A focus on Modern Workplace Learning with insights around communities, MOOCs, mobile-learning, micro-learning and infographics will also be presented.

The program will be facilitated primarily through two powerful approaches: guided discovery and looped input, both of which allow you to immersively explore and immediately apply techniques.

Key Takeaways

  • Write measurable instructional objectives that take into account business outcomes using Bloom's Taxonomy
  • Discuss the impact of SMAC (Social, Mobile, Analytics, Cloud) and leverage these to design a 'learnscape'
  • Develop relevant assessments to assess learning and impact analysis tools to evaluate the effectiveness of solutions by reviewing existing approaches and current practices
  • Map instructional strategies to moments of need
  • Use the principles of 21st century pedagogy and learning technology to inform design
  • Incorporate instructional tasks, simulations, games, and other interactions to design a learning journey
  • Look at evolving ID tools like Articulate, Captivate, ESN Platforms etc.
