SHRM Files Amicus Brief in Response to Arizona Immigration Law
SHRM, along with other members of the HR Initiative for a Legal Workforce (HRI), filed an amicus brief on Friday, September 14, 2007 in Arizona Contractors Association v. Janet Napolitano. In its filing, the group voiced strong support of the Arizona Contractors Association’s request that the Court find that federal law preempts the new law. SHRM and the HRI challenged the Legal Arizona Workers Act (HB 2779), which prohibits employers located in Arizona; who transact business in Arizona; or who employ one or more persons in Arizona, from hiring persons who do not have authorization to work in the United States. In addition, all Arizona employers will be required to use a voluntary federal government-administered electronic verification system, formerly known as the “Basic Pilot,” to verify work eligibility of all employees. View a copy of the amicus brief.
