The PWFA, ADA and FMLA: How They Interact and What Employers Need to Know

An employee requests time off for in vitro fertilization. How do you respond? What if an employee requests time off for gestational diabetes? Employees could have rights and protections under the federal Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and/or the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Employers need to know how to handle such requests and how protections under the three laws interact. 

Join this session to learn the following:

  • How to identify employee requests under the laws that would trigger employer obligations.
  • The protections and benefits of each law; how they interact and don’t; the gaps that are filled in.
  • How to handle requests related to the laws: communicating, seeing the big picture, responding, and accommodations (including leave).

Your presenters will reserve time to answer as many attendee questions as possible.

    Darlene (Dolly) Clabault, SHRM-CP, PHR, CLMS has been an editor at J. J. Keller & Associates since 1996. As a member of the Human Resources Publishing team, she researches and creates content on several HR topics such as employee leave, FMLA, the ADA, and HIPAA. She has presented at a variety of HR-related events and her work has been published in books and periodicals. As an editor of a variety of publications and services, Darlene has helped many Human Resource professionals with their issues and challenges.
