Although automation has long been a central characteristic of technological change, rapid advances in recent years have generated intense interest about the nature of work and the extent to which automation technologies will transform or replace labor. In response, SHRM has embarked on a new line of research aimed at understanding the exposure of U.S. employment to AI and automation. Part I of this effort leverage publicly available data and a novel methodology to estimate the distribution of automation displacement risk in the current U.S. workforce.
