The Cargo Freight Agent will schedule incoming and outgoing cargo and freight shipments to be transported via truck, train, air, or other means.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Collects shipping orders from clients.
- Prepares estimates for postal or freight rates, shipping charges, and tariffs.
- Chooses appropriate shipping method and prepares bills of lading, invoices, and other shipping documents.
- Confirms proper import/export documentation and classifies goods into appropriate fee or tariff groups.
- Facilitates delivery of cargo from clients to the loading platform.
- Schedules and negotiates transportation of goods with shipping or freight companies.
- Documents shipment costs and weights.
- Notifies customers, passengers, or consignees of the arrival of freight or baggage and arranges delivery.
- Traces and locates lost shipments when necessary.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent communication skills.
- Basic understanding of standards for shipping and freight.
- Ability to prepare manifests showing baggage, mail, and freight weights.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to follow instructions.
- Proficient with shipping tools such as package scanners and strapping machines.
- Proficient with computer-based shipping databases.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods working on a computer.
- Ability to pass physical exam and be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl in awkward positions.
- Able to lift up to 75 pounds at a time.
- May be exposed to loud noises, harmful materials, or dangerous machinery.
