Job Summary:
The Hydrologist will research the distribution, circulation, and physical properties of underground and surface waters.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- May oversee the work of junior research assistants, technologists, and technicians.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Studies the form and intensity of precipitation, its rate of infiltration into the soil and movement through the ground, and its return to the ocean and atmosphere.
- Conducts field investigations to collect water samples to be analyzed.
- Evaluates known or suspected hazardous waste sites and land treatment facilities.
- Investigates public water supply issues, which includes assessing flood risks, water quality, drought risks, wastewater, and impact on wetland habitats.
- Drafts and distributes reports that include illustrations, appendices, maps and other attachments to summarize research results.
- Uses research findings to make recommendations to minimize the environmental impacts of pollution, erosion, sedimentation, and waterborne diseases.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to use maps to describe and record landscapes.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, Physical Sciences, or related field required.
- At least two years of experience in related field or hydrologic work required.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be physically able to conduct field work and handle equipment.
- Ability to traverse various terrain when working in the field.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
