Job Summary:
The Transportation Security Screener will ensure the safety of passengers by screening individuals, luggage, cargo, and aircraft at specified checkpoints.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Inspects and screens passengers, cargo, and baggage for items that could be dangerous to other passengers, the transportation vehicle, or other property.
- Uses inspection and detection devices to identify hidden or forgotten items inside luggage, pockets, or other areas.
- Observes passengers to detect and investigate potentially threatening behaviors.
- Works with law enforcement if a serious breach of security standards occurs.
- Operates security equipment such as x-ray machines or hand wands.
- Tests for explosive materials using swab systems and/or detection machines.
- Notifies supervisors regarding security breaches.
- Confirms the validity of tickets and identification presented by passengers.
- Performs pat-downs.
- Treats passengers with professionalism and kindness even if they must be questioned or searched beyond the minimal screening process.
- Maintains security knowledge and skills by attending or completing ongoing training.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Good verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate safety rules to travelers.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact politely with passengers including during stressful situations.
- Thorough understanding of transportation security rules and procedures.
- Thorough and detail-oriented.
- Ability to accurately perform the job under the pressure of large crowds and long lines.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Ability to pass background check and credit check.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Successful completion of on-the-job training, which includes 40 hours of classroom training and 60 hours of on-the-job training, required.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds at times.
- Visual acuity to inspect items that are close or in the distance.
- Ability to hear conversations and detect unexpected sounds.
- Ability to pass periodic drug screenings and medical evaluations.
