Now that school is back in full swing, state school-activities-leave laws should be top of mind for employers, as employees seek time off to participate in parent-student conferences, school concerts, or sporting events. When these laws apply can vary, so HR needs to keep managers informed.
Other recent workplace compliance news includes a new student visas rule, and the modification of employer drug testing requirements in Iowa and Minnesota.
School-Activities-Leave Laws May Apply
The number of hours employers must let employees be away from work varies by state under school-activities-leave laws. Who is eligible to take such leave, and which activities are covered also differ according to state law.
"Even if the employer has employees in states that don't require school activities leave, businesses might want to consider offering it, " said Carolyn Rashby, an attorney with Covington in San Francisco. As a practical matter, many employees expect employers to work with them when they need such time off.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has proposed replacing open-ended duration of status admissions for F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors with fixed stays of up to four years.
States Alter Employer Drug Testing Requirements
Two states recently changed their employer drug testing mandates. Iowa streamlined its drug testing compliance rules, while Minnesota tightened medical cannabis protections, adding employer duties.
Minnesota's law took effect May 24, while Iowa's became effective July 1.
