3 Steps Leaders Can Take to Promote Trust in AI

Artificial intelligence is creating massive waves in transforming decision-making and improving efficiency across industries. It is swiftly implemented in core day-to-day tasks to empower employees and serve broader organizational interests. According to Gallup, nearly 93% of Fortune 500 CHROs confirm that their organizations have invested in AI tools (generative AI, predictive AI, and task automation) to enhance business practices. However, leaders continue to face a critical challenge in AI adoption: building employee trust in AI.

These figures have either dropped or remained unchanged in recent years, indicating employee resistance towards AI and underutilization, perhaps due to a lack of leadership efforts to build trust in AI and provide clear support and direction. This may also point to a deeper issue, i.e., lack of confidence in leadership.

Employee distrust towards AI may not be entirely baseless. Employees may rightfully be anxious about how AI will be used (fairness and ethical concerns) and skeptical about the leadership's motivation behind implementing AI (whether it promotes their interests or potentially replaces their contributions).

This shows that the future of AI adoption in workplaces lies in technical innovation and relies heavily on ethical leadership.

Reasons for Distrust in AI Adoption

If AI systems are deployed without fostering trust between employees through communication and transparency, many counterproductive outcomes can be expected.

A few common reasons for lack of trust in AI among employees include:

  • The potential of AI to hurt employee interests.

  • Unfair and unethical use of AI in the workplace.

  • AI's lack of benevolence in decision-making.

  • The potential of AI to perpetuate implicit bias and discrimination.

  • Lack of clarity around how AI may be used and for what purposes.

Lack of transparency in communication and fear of job displacement can fuel the anxiety around artificial intelligence, creating a need for leaders to provide clear support and direction.

Effective Ways to Create Trust in AI

Many organizations make the mistake of deploying AI systems as black boxes, assuming that outcomes (improved efficiency and productivity) will justify the process. This lack of transparency and prior communication can undermine trust in leadership and the company's decision-making.

  1. Create a safe space for dialogue about AI.

A decisive step towards creating trust in AI adoption is encouraging psychologically safe and judgment-free conversations around AI. Employees must feel comfortable about expressing their concerns and anxieties about AI use without fear of retaliation or ridicule.

HR and leaders should focus on creating structured two-way communication opportunities (focus groups, AI-specific meetings, training sessions) for employees to ask questions and raise doubts before implementing any AI tools. For instance, if management plans to implement AI in a performance review, they can conduct focused sessions to communicate to employees transparently:

  • The rationale behind the decision.

  • What data will be collected, how, and how often will it be collected?

  • Whether there are systems and safeguards to track fairness and ethical use.

Yet, according to Gallup, only 15% of employees report that their organizations have communicated their intentions to integrate AI technology into everyday roles.

It is a leadership responsibility to demonstrate commitment toward fairness and employee well-being. Therefore, involving the workforce in discussions about AI and ensuring transparency can ameliorate distrust in AI.

    2. Modeling responsibility through ethical leadership

Business leaders who model ethical and responsible use of AI systems can set a powerful precedent for workforces, encouraging them to leverage AI prudently and with accountability.

Leaders should ensure consistency in AI applications and demonstrate genuine concern for progressing their bottom line. AI algorithms must be regularly audited to prevent bias and discrimination from being introduced into company practices.

     3. Training and support

Leaders should ensure employees are adequately trained and feel technically confident using AI. Dedicated training programs and leadership-led workshops can promote AI literacy and an enhanced understanding of its functioning.

The underlying messaging of these programs can position AI as an assistive tool to empower employees and serve the company's interests in ethical, fair, and respectful ways. Doing so can significantly decrease the perceived threat of AI adoption and build trust in leadership.

Conclusion

Encouraging AI use through policy mandates cannot improve AI uptake alone. Employees may harbor reasonable fears about AI, such as the fear of being unfairly monitored, potentially replaced, or undervalued by organizations.

Therefore, transparent communication, responsible use, and ethical leadership are necessary. Fostering a psychologically safe work culture, providing training resources for upskilling and education, and holding leadership-led discussions are key prerequisites for organizations looking to incorporate AI systems into workplaces.
