Workplaces are changing and so is the role of a leader with the fast-evolving technology that shapes work. At the session, “Workforce 2030: Skills, Systems, and Shifts”, Shraddhanjali Rao, Head of Human Resources, Google India, asks leaders to reimagine their role in an increasingly AI-enabled workplace.
The traditional image of a leader as a “stopwatch” who measures time, monitors processes and ensures that existing rules are adhered to, is becoming less relevant. In today’s workplace, what was once called an “exception” can quickly become the new norm.
Rao calls for a shift from command-and-control leadership to becoming “compass guiders.” Leaders should not be trying to have all the answers. Rather, they should try to provide direction, create clarity and help their people navigate uncertainty. This is particularly important because humans and AI are increasingly working together. The leadership challenge is not only to introduce new technologies, but to bring together people and machines in ways that complement their strengths, while keeping the organization aligned to its purpose.
The 2030’s workforce leaders will have to do more than manage change. They will have to lead the people through it, set the direction, and carry the organization forward.
