Fortifying Wellness: HR Tactics for Employee Resilience

December 7, 2023 | SHRM Advisor

Companies work on uncertain grounds - and a big uncertainty is regarding their workforce. They must always find innovative yet sustainable strategies for hiring, retaining, and removing talent. HR leaders should invest in employee well-being to get over this uncertainty. One of the key aspects is building resilience among employees to help individuals and organizations thrive in a positive work culture.

Employee well-being is key to fostering resilience, which means adapting to dynamic organizational changes. It helps employees face challenges, relieve stress, and maintain positive relationships.

Strategies to Improve Employee Well-Being

  • Provide Recognition and Rewards

Employee well-being is directly related to recognition and rewards because when leaders praise them, subordinates become satisfied and proud of their work. Moreover, when employees receive rewards (monetary or in-kind) for their accomplishments, they get motivated to do better. It builds employer-employee trust and fosters a positive working environment.

Different studies have shown that recognition boosts workers' job satisfaction, engagement, performance, and commitment to their organization. Consequently, whenever employees’ mental well-being is improved, they put extra effort into completing their work and meeting goals.

  • Create a Positive Work Culture

A positive work culture encourages collaboration and creativity. In this work culture, employees get the necessary resources and support to innovate ideas and succeed in their careers. The workplace becomes inclusive and open to sharing creative ideas, involving employees in decision-making, and implementing beneficial policies. All these benefits lead to a diverse and safe environment.

A positive work culture makes advanced training and educational opportunities, flexible work arrangements, or competitive salaries accessible. Employees feel connected to their work and become productive with a positive work culture.

  • Offer Flexible Working Hours

Companies should meet their workers' demands and needs by offering remote working options. This working schedule gives employees control over the work-life balance to manage personal and professional commitments. Moreover, flexible hours and remote working reduce transportation time to offices and make the workforce more productive.

Flexible remote working enables employees to fit family time, health, and higher educational requirements into their schedules. It allows greater autonomy and independence at work because flexibility makes employees willing to take on additional responsibilities.

  • Introduce Mindfulness Practices

HR leaders should dedicate some time daily or weekly for mindfulness activities for all employees. These practices increase workplace productivity, reducing absenteeism and turnover rates. Employees feel reduced stress, increased job happiness, and psychological peace.

Meditation and mindfulness practices help employees collect their thoughts and enjoy a peaceful break from continuous work. These practices may aim at physical and mental exercises to let employees fully unwind and return to work fresh. It helps employees freely communicate in the workplace and foster meaningful connections with their colleagues. Introducing these practices in the workplace creates a positive environment and makes employees feel safe.

  • Promote Group Activities

Promoting a culture of collaboration, engagement, and trust boosts employee well-being. It breaks down the barriers between departments by allowing workers to interact with others regarding assignments, concerns, or casual topics.

Group activities promote innovation, problem-solving, and organizational performance. They can include weekly games/casual days, work trips, nature retreats, cross-departmental projects, etc.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, employee well-being is one of the top priorities for HR leaders globally. Employers must ensure workers lead a satisfied work life in positive working conditions. It enables employees to work to their full potential and feel comfortable coming to work. Organizations that prioritize employee well-being achieve greater success in the long run.
