The Courage to Make a Call: The Power of HR in the Age of AI

July 21, 2026 | Anirban R Banerjee

The world is witnessing a significant shift in how HR will operate in the coming years, from a Business Partner and Operations model to a Centre of Excellence (CoE) model for the people side of business that acts as a strategic think tank.

The rapidly changing workplace and its ecosystem are directly linked to the effectiveness and efficiency of economic activity. As organizations navigate increasingly complex and challenging environments, the scope of Human Resource Management needs to evolve. Policymakers need to rethink how we define and measure Human Resource interventions. It is also important to strengthen the positioning of Human Resources as a domain to enable it to frame more people-centric and sustainable growth models.

This transition would enable HR to deepen its expertise by drawing from a broader range of interdisciplinary subjects to provide more effective solutions for managing people-related risks and creating sustainable performance models. This is key to building a healthier, more capable, collaborative, future-ready, and productive workforce.

Why India's Diverse Workforce Is HR's Greatest Opportunity

India has one of the world's largest and most diverse pools of human capital. Indians have consistently demonstrated their ability to contribute to the global economy. India’s talent pool is ethnically and culturally diverse, shaped by varying social, historical, and geographical factors. This diversity makes workforce management in India both challenging and exciting.

One of the most unique aspects of the HR function is the critical role it plays in bringing synergy to this diversity of talent and enabling collaboration with professionals from multiple nations. This is why HR, with its deeper and broader understanding of people and organizations, can drive change, develop people, and lead transformation. It is this context that makes India both one of the most challenging and one of the most exciting places to build and grow a business.

Expanding the Scope of Modern Human Resources

The HR profession must continue embracing inclusion and diversity. HR professionals must develop a stronger understanding of people coming from diverse educational backgrounds, cultures, industries, and specializations. Managing the people side of business requires expertise across multiple domains, along with a strong understanding of law, psychology, business management, technology, and culture.

Today, HR is a multidisciplinary field that draws knowledge from geopolitics, history, geography, sociology, psychology, management, law, technology, and even sports. HR can no longer remain a support function; it needs to move beyond its traditional role. To drive and lead organizational success, HR must evolve into a Centre of Excellence that addresses the people side of business. This model for an organization's in-house think tank improves collaboration and execution of people initiatives.

Any conversation on Human Resource Development and growth is incomplete without inclusiveness and regional balance. India's ability to sustain long-term growth will depend on how effectively it addresses challenges related to the quality of healthcare, the credibility and quality of education, and the infrastructure that supports ease of living and working. These issues directly impact quality of life and economic standards.

The migration of high-value talent to other countries and inconsistent FDI inflows adversely impact the creation of meaningful opportunities for our youth. The continued exodus of human capital affects our ability to innovate, conduct research, and manufacture across strategic sectors. Increasing income disparities and regional imbalances further affect pan-India growth and human capital development.

Addressing Regional Talent Gaps and Hiring Bias

One of the major challenges that the HR fraternity must address is the hiring bias favouring a few metropolitan locations, which creates unequal access to economic opportunities. We must embrace talent from across regions, with particular emphasis on Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, the Northeast, and other interior and remote parts of the country. India has quality human capital, but many individuals lack the opportunity, support, and encouragement to reach their full potential. We must acknowledge these challenges and work collectively to address them.

Recent studies on the concept of presenteeism—where individuals are physically present at work but deliver suboptimal or poor-quality output—highlight the importance of employee well-being.

Sports and sports-based organizational development initiatives can improve engagement and address lifestyle-related health concerns. Organizational psychology can play a critical role in building capability beyond transactional training interventions while helping organizations identify and mitigate people-related risks. Human Resources must create initiatives and platforms that support aspirational individuals with untapped potential.

Globally, HR is becoming increasingly interconnected, enabling it to evolve as a catalyst for change and transformation. This evolution helps organizations move from merely surviving to truly thriving by leveraging and celebrating their people. This should be the way forward for us as well. Human Resources must engage with a broad cross-section of society to understand the factors influencing work life and help people navigate emerging challenges.

In an age of disruption and uncertainty, human Intelligence becomes even more important. It is the human mind that must exercise judgment, build trust, determine what is worth doing, distinguish effectiveness from efficiency, and, most importantly, have the courage to make a call.

This will be one of the most significant contributions that Human Resources must make in the years ahead. India needs a collective effort to drive a mindset shift among policymakers, business leaders, and people development professionals. We must reimagine and redefine business and people development models to create inclusive, healthy, and sustainable growth that benefits every part of the country.

Swami Vivekananda, in his teachings, consistently emphasized that Human Resources are the greatest strength of any nation. He was also a strong advocate for human empowerment as a cornerstone of nation-building. India, with its rich civilizational heritage spanning several millennia, has been the cradle of knowledge and learning. It is now time for each one of us to contribute meaningfully to people's development.
