Workplace Mental Health Beyond Yoga Fridays

August 31, 2025 | SHRM Advisor

Mental health directly impacts a person’s personal and professional life. Companies also increasingly recognize that workplace mental health directly impacts productivity, retention, and bottom-line results. The jarring effects of COVID-19 drew long-overdue attention to workplace mental health and brought it to the spotlight. Many organizations have introduced numerous quick fixes, such as duvet days, yoga Fridays, and meditation apps; however, while these activities raise awareness of mental health, they seldom tackle the underlying causes of stress and burnout experienced by employees. Yoga and other initiatives are good, but trust in them fades fast without real policy and cultural changes.

In this blog, we will explore the benefits of workplace mental health, the challenges organizations face in implementing mental health initiatives, and practical strategies that go beyond surface-level fixes.

Benefits of Embedding Workplace Mental Health Into Your EVP

Organizations are now looking at including workplace mental health in their Employee Value Proposition (EVP). An Employee Value Proposition is the unique set of benefits, rewards, and experiences that an organization offers to its employees for their skills, capabilities, and commitment. It makes organizations better equipped to attract and retain top talent, enhance employee well-being, and reduce attrition rates while increasing productivity and employee engagement with the firm. It is essential for the following reasons:

  1. Today’s job market is competitive, and if your organization offers mental health support in your EVP, it can help you attract and retain the crème de la crème of the job market. Millennials and Gen Z increasingly prefer employers who demonstrate a commitment to employee well-being.

  2. A strong EVP includes employee well-being and a focus on workplace mental health, which creates a positive work environment where employees feel seen, heard, and supported. If you provide access to mental health resources, it will help you improve overall well-being, boosting morale and job satisfaction.

  3. You can create a productive and collaborative environment in the workplace, which will, in turn, help your business achieve better results.

  4. If you include workplace mental health as a part of your EVP, it will help you address the increasing attrition rates and absenteeism. When employees are supported, employees who are grappling with mental health issues are less likely to leave their jobs, which can help organizations save money on hiring and training new employees over time.

To understand why organizations struggle with this, we need to examine the challenges that make mental health such a complex issue in workplaces today.

Challenges in Supporting Workplace Mental Health

There are many challenges organizations face, even when they are open about mental health issues and ready to provide employees with the resources and support they need.

  • Mental health issues continue to carry a stigma, causing many employees to hesitate in speaking openly about stress for fear that it may negatively impact how managers or peers perceive them.

  • Even when organizations offer wellness resources, they may not always apply equally to contract staff, frontline workers, or remote employees.

  • There are times when, to complete a mandatory mental health training, employees are asked to attend a wellness session on top of already heavy workloads, which can feel contradictory.

  • Not all managers are trained to recognize or respond to mental health needs within their teams.

Organizations can deal with these challenges through a thorough strategy and plan. Let’s look at a few strategies to strengthen workplace mental health.

Strategies to Strengthen Workplace Mental Health

To make a lasting impact, organizations need to build workplace mental health into everyday policies, culture, and leadership practices. Here are seven strategies that go beyond surface-level solutions:

  1. Cultivate psychological safety: Despite numerous conversations, initiatives, and awareness about mental health, discussing mental health at work still feels risky for many employees because the stigma around it persists. One way to bring about a change is to encourage leaders and managers to acknowledge their challenges or share what helps them cope. This approach also encourages teams to express their problems more openly. Leaders can set the tone and make conversations about stress, anxiety, or burnout part of everyday dialogue instead of taboo topics because psychological safety starts with an open dialogue.

  2. Redefine the ways of working: Have you ever thought about why even the most generous employee wellness programs fall short? It simply happens because workloads are unmanageable. Embedding well-being into job design means checking whether goals, staffing levels, and deadlines are realistic. Respecting their capacity increases employee engagement and reduces the likelihood of burnout. Structural fairness matters more than one-off perks.

  3. Equip managers to recognize and respond: The line managers or supervisors are often the first to notice a dip in performance or energy, but they may not know how to address it. Therefore, training managers to recognize early signs of stress, hold compassionate conversations, and point employees toward resources ensures that support isn’t left to chance. A well-prepared manager can make a significant difference if they can help employees feel valued even when times are difficult.

  4. Make support easy to access: HR must see to it that resources like counseling, mental health hotlines, or peer-support groups are visible and stigma-free. Organizations need to see to it that support extends beyond office staff to include remote employees, contract workers, and frontline teams. When everyone knows help is available and feels safe enough to use it, trust in the organization grows stronger.

  5. Continuously listen and adapt: Mental health initiatives must align with the current needs as they shift with time, industry trends, and personal circumstances. What works for a CEO might not work for a marketer, and what worked for a marketer might not work for a salesperson. Therefore, before implementing any program, you should assess its relevance in today’s time for your employees and your organization. You can conduct surveys, introduce listening forums, and get regular feedback from employees to help your leaders understand what employees truly need and accordingly update your employee wellness programs based on these inputs to send a powerful message that you are listening and are ready to change.

  6. Recognize contributions meaningfully: For the modern workforce, more often than not, recognition is not just about bonuses or awards or emails but about acknowledging effort, resilience, and collaboration visibly in public forums. Something as simple as a public thank-you in a team meeting or highlighting someone’s work in a company-wide update can boost morale and make them feel valued.

  7. Create policies that support balance: Policies play a quiet but powerful role in shaping an organization’s culture. When a firm offers mental health days, flexible schedules, or enhanced parental and caregiver leave, it indicates that the organization is serious about well-being because these aren’t perks; they are signals that employee mental health and well-being are built into how the company operates. Strong policies create a foundation where workplace mental health is prioritized, not sidelined.

Conclusion

Yoga is wonderful, but workplace mental health cannot be reduced to yoga Fridays or token initiatives. Real progress comes when leaders treat well-being as a structural, cultural, and leadership priority. Employees who feel supported and safe are not only healthier but also more committed and productive. By moving beyond symbolic gestures and designing thoughtful employee wellness programs integrated into daily work life, organizations can build resilient teams that thrive in the long run.
