Upskilling and Reskilling: The Leading Workforce Strategy in the Age of AI

SHRM Advisor

The integration of AI and emerging technologies in practically every industry across the globe is redefining the competencies required for workforces to thrive. Organizations today find themselves at a critical turning point as repetitive tasks are quickly automated and AI augments decision-making. This transformation of workplaces and the strategic imperative of upskilling and reskilling in the age of AI are transforming organizations.

According to the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, nearly 65% of Indian company leaders identify skill gaps in the labor market as the most significant barrier to business transformation. As a result, many employers are reevaluating their workforce strategies, with nearly 53% of companies believing reskilling and upskilling are their most prominent strategies for delivering business goals in the coming years.

This article will discuss what upskilling and reskilling entail and how AI has accelerated the urgency.

Understanding Upskilling and Reskilling

Upskilling refers to the process of enhancing one's existing skill sets, often through advanced training, to improve performance or adapt to evolving job responsibilities. A digital marketer learning AI tools to optimize ads is an example of upskilling.

On the contrary, reskilling is defined as learning an entirely new skillset, usually for a different role or function in response to shifts in market demands and technological advances. If a customer service executive, due to the impact of automation on support services, were retrained to become a data analyst, it would be an example of reskilling. Reskilling may enable a quick competitive advantage for companies by cultivating talent that may be scarce in the market and bridging critical skill gaps essential to achieving organizational objectives.

Upskilling helps optimize performance in an existing structure, whereas reskilling enables career reinvention. While upskilling and reskilling serve distinct purposes, they often complement each other to build a future-ready workplace and are equally important in the age of artificial intelligence.

Why Do Upskilling and Reskilling Matter?

Artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies are rapidly heading into the workplace.

According to the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, nearly 22% of current roles are expected to undergo disruption by 2030, with 170 million new positions to be created and 92 million displaced. In India, nearly 38% of core skills are expected to be disrupted in light of AI and automation, and employees may need to reskill and upskill to stay ahead of the curve.

Further, skills are depreciating faster than ever due to the accelerated pace of technological evolution. According to the Harvard Business Review, the average half-life of technical skills (the time it takes for a skill to become half as valuable or relevant) is less than 2.5 years. This makes continuous learning not just beneficial but essential.

  • From an employer's standpoint, upskilling and reskilling promote employee engagement, reduce turnover, and fill critical talent gaps. Investing in workforce development may allow companies to gain a competitive edge by improving internal agility.

  • The stakes are high for individuals as well. In today's world, many routine tasks can be performed using AI; hence, unique human skills (creative thinking, adaptability, leadership influence, etc.) and technological fluency (AI and big data, network and cybersecurity, etc.) can allow employees to thrive. Upskilling may help employees reduce the risk of falling behind. Proactively reskilling can enable employees to navigate layoffs and industry transitions better.

Strategic Approaches to Upskilling and Reskilling

Deliberate, sustained strategies may be implemented towards upskilling and reskilling across organizations, individuals, and governments.

  1. Employer-led initiatives

Most forward-thinking organizations are fast-moving towards integrated learning ecosystems rather than rigid training modules.

Upskilling and reskilling initiatives can be a way to adapt to digital transformations and diversity initiatives.

  • Companies may invest in personalized learning paths and AI platform support to mitigate knowledge gaps.

  • If a company plans to implement new software, it can preemptively upskill the team rather than hiring externally.

  • Organizations may also focus on internal mobility through learning and upskilling to reduce onboarding time and improve employee retention.

    2. Individual initiatives

Institutional support may be paramount, but personal accountability and self-responsibility are key to staying employable in a competitive market. Formal education and employer-led training initiatives cannot be relied solely to keep up with the emerging skills gap. On the contrary, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), coding boot camps, and micro-credentials may be leveraged for self-directed learning.

Another equally important aspect to consider is skills awareness. Employees must reassess and audit their skills and core competencies to identify adjacent skills and invest in areas of relevance. Career paths are becoming non-linear, and only those embracing flexibility will likely remain relevant.

    3. Shaping growth mindsets and attitudes

To implement effective reskilling programs, companies may go beyond solely offering training and mentorship opportunities and build an organizational environment conducive to long-term success. This approach may involve shaping the right attitudes and behaviors among both employees and leaders by viewing reskilling as a change-management effort that demands urgent attention.

    4. Public sector support

Governments and the public sector are increasingly involved in workforce transitions. Reskilling campaigns, vocational training subsidies, and edtech partnerships may be implemented to make learning accessible to everyone. Many countries, like Singapore and Denmark, have already implemented lifelong learning initiatives for citizens to support learning.

Policy frameworks, however, may evolve continuously to ensure relevance since static qualification systems can impede agility. Policymakers may also ensure collaboration with industry leaders to remain in alignment with market demands.

    5. ROI of learning

Course completion rates alone cannot measure effective upskilling. Measurement through application and tracking the impact on desired goals may be necessary. Learning programs may be linked to quantifiable KPIs like innovation metrics, employee retention, and internal mobility rates.

Moreover, employees may also ensure that they demonstrate competency through portfolios and project work rather than acquiring certificates.

Conclusion

In today's ever-changing work ecosystem, upskilling and reskilling are the bedrock of workforce stability and sustainability. As more analytical and repetitive tasks are automated, the role of humans in workplaces is being reevaluated and refined. However, human judgment, empathy, creativity, and adaptability are unique abilities that AI cannot replicate.

In the age of AI, leaders who work intentionally to advance their teams can create dynamic, ever-evolving workforces that can navigate AI advancements with resilience. Employees who engage in learning and upskilling as an ongoing pursuit are likely to remain empowered and employable in tough markets.
