Job Summary:
The Safety Engineer will develop and implement procedures, guidelines, and equipment to promote and ensure industrial safety and health.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assesses, monitors, and controls industrial hygiene, which includes reviewing long-term effects of chemical exposure, lighting, noise, heat, radiation, and humidity.
- Provides expert guidance on best practices for identifying and reducing exposure to dangerous conditions.
- Tours the facility and communicates with workers to identify safety risks and concerns.
- Drafts reports, highlighting dangerous procedures, machinery, and other risks for management review.
- Develops and implements safety and loss-control policies and procedures.
- Develops and implements a system to report, monitor, and correct safety problems.
- Collaborates with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) representatives and internal safety staff during formal plant audits and inspections; documents corrective actions taken.
- Adopts a proactive approach to providing a safe working environment; provides training and guidance to employees via safety bulletins, documentation, and training meetings.
- Maintains knowledge of hazard prevention and safety best practices, equipment, and developments.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to identify unsafe situations or potentially unsafe situations.
- Thorough understanding of mechanical engineering principles and health and safety laws.
- Extensive knowledge of current company safety policies and applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Technology, or related field required.
- At least three years of experience in a manufacturing environment required.
- Certified Safety Professional status preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able to traverse entire facility and make visual inspections of safety practices and conditions.
