SHRM: DHS Must Improve Workplace Immigration Guidance, Partnerships
On June 23, SHRM sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), reaffirming its commitment to supporting effective, compliant workplace immigration policies. Representing nearly 340,000 members across 180 countries, SHRM emphasized the vital role HR professionals play in ensuring legal compliance while managing a dynamic workforce.
Within the letter, SHRM noted that immigrant workers are essential to key sectors such as agriculture, hospitality, and construction, and currently make up nearly 20% of the U.S. labor force. These workers are vital to complementing U.S. workers and bolstering the U.S. economy at large. In its letter, SHRM urged DHS to:
1. Issue clear and consistent guidance on Form I-9 and employment eligibility, especially following recent Supreme Court decisions affecting Temporary Protected Status and parole programs.
2. Partner with HR professionals, who are on the front lines of compliance and workforce management.
3. Modernize visa and adjudication systems to better align with today’s labor market needs.
SHRM stands ready to collaborate with DHS to build a transparent, efficient, and responsive workplace immigration system that supports employers, workers, and the economy.
