Adopting ChatGPT In Workplaces

Artificial intelligence has dramatically evolved in recent years, and its impact can be felt across many industries and job forms. Many are in a quandary about where they will fit in a future dominated by AI-programmed robots doing human work. Moreover, the growing use of ChatGPT has raised various moral and legal issues, most significantly regarding data privacy. Nevertheless, this advanced deep learning system that involves training a neural network to learn from vast amounts of freely available data has garnered much traction, especially from the working class. Let us examine Gen AI's potential and limitations in complementing human intelligence and affecting work lives for better or worse.

Constant Learning

In today's times, organizations need technologies that are sophisticated yet simple in functionality. The future of work is intelligent workplaces that are intuitive and adaptive to ever-changing needs and dynamic ecosystems. Such smart and innovative workplaces, enabled by advanced deep learning systems, will generate the need for constant upkeep of a wealth of knowledge and skills. Subramanian Viswanathan, Co-founder and CEO, Disprz, says, "If people do not keep pace through constant learning, we will be in serious trouble. The culture of learning and agility is what we need to focus on." As the adoption of chatbots in businesses rises, so will the demand for niche talent who can design, build, and maintain advanced and sophisticated technology. HR folks are at the vanguard of building a future-ready brigade of employees lanced with forward-looking skills.

The Way Forward

Every piece of knowledge or technology becomes obsolete with time, paving the way for more advanced ones. Are the organizations up for the challenge of upscaling and upskilling workforces with changing requirements? "Taking a cue from history, the way forward is rescaling and upscaling and embracing the change as an opportunity instead of resisting," quotes Dr. Varadharaju Janardhanan, Vice President-HR, Flipkart. Integrating Generative AI into various routine processes can lead to a spike in efficiency, thus galvanizing a better-performing workplace. Leaders who can see the opportunity in adversity often reap greater rewards. All it takes is a leap of faith.

Emerging Opportunities

One of the primary characteristics of ChatGPT, with its ability to come up with coherent and contextually relevant responses to open-ended prompts, might be a disruptor for many job types. "Basic Copywriting, Visual Design, Basic Coding, News Summarization, and such jobs will be taken over by ChatGPT," said Jaspreet Bindra, Founder and Director of Tech Whisperer. Language translation and customer service are some other jobs that Gen AI can replace.

How far will deep learning technology stir the job market? Bindra emphasizes, "ChatGPT will enhance most jobs. To put it appropriately, AI will not replace you, but a person using AI will." It is crucial to address it as an opportunity to proactively upskill the workforce to adapt to the shifting job market and ensure a smooth transition to the future of work.

Every displaced opportunity is a doorway to an emerging opportunity. Every advanced technology eventually creates new opportunities for people with the right skills. The rise of Google is an example. Can the increased dependence on ChatGPT make us lazy? "It's the same question that was asked in an earlier era. Will Google make us lazy, or will it make it easy? I think it will make life easy," opines Harshvendra Soin, Global CPO and Head of Marketing at Tech Mahindra. After all, technology can only make us lazy about the things we can afford to be lazy about.

Ongoing Improvements and Bug Fixes

This conversational AI, too, has its blind side. ChatGPT may not comprehend the subtleties of the context, leading to unsatisfactory solutions to a unique problem posed, hence being unable to give a human-like experience. Moreover, it may lack nuance as it garners responses by picking freely available data. Data privacy issues also cannot be ignored.

Technology enthusiasts share a more optimistic view on conversational AI, which is apparently justified by improvements and bug fixes in every new ChatGPT launch version. For instance, a recently announced new privacy feature lets ChatGPT users disable chat history, preventing conversations from being leaked or used for conversation with other users. While at the focus of various arguments, Gen AI is firming up its place in our lives. Dr. Janardhanan says, "The future will be a blend of AI and HI (Human Intelligence). Let's embrace tech and touch like two sides of the same coin."

In Conclusion

Depending on how you look at it, ChatGPT and AI might either help or hurt the employment market. It can offer uniformity, accurate information, and time savings. However, as of now, it needs more nuance and has limited problem-solving ability. Like any other technology, ChatGPT has benefits and drawbacks that businesses must weigh to decide if and how it serves their purposes. It is better to view technology as an enabler than as an alarm to create a replacement strategy.
