Job Summary:
The Coroner will direct activities such as autopsies, pathological and toxicological analyses, and inquests relating to the investigation of deaths occurring in a legal jurisdiction to determine cause of death or to assign responsibility for accidental, violent, or unexplained deaths.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Directs activities of workers who conduct autopsies, perform pathological and toxicological analyses, and prepares documents for permanent records.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Removes or supervises removal of bodies from death scenes using the proper equipment and supplies and arranges for transportation to morgues.
- Performs medicolegal examinations and autopsies and conducts preliminary examinations of a bodies to identify victims, locate signs of trauma, and identify factors that would indicate time of death. Observes and records the positions and conditions of bodies and related evidence.
- Collects and documents pertinent medical history information.
- Completes death certificates including the assignment of cause and manner of death. Completes reports and forms required to finalize cases.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to skillfully perform medicolegal examinations and autopsies.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as medical reports and accident and investigative reports.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before public groups and employees of the organization.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Good attention to detail, precision, and ability to handle large amounts of administrative work in stressful situations.
Education and Experience:
- Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree.
- State certification and licensing as required.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequently required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch or crawl; and talk; or hear.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Must regularly lift and/or move 300 or more pounds with assistance.
- Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions.
- Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; and extreme heat.
- Exposure to a noise level in the work environment that is usually moderate.
